VITOR VIEIRA
Vítor Vieira is a member of the MSQ and professor at both ESMAE (Porto) and the Lisbon Academy of Music. With the quartet, he has performed in Portugal’s leading venues and festivals, collaborating with renowned musicians such as pianists Pedro Burmester, António Rosado, and Miguel Borges Coelho, percussionist Pedro Carneiro, violists Tatjana Masurenko and Máté Szucs, and cellists Paulo Gaio Lima and Lázló Fenyö.
With MSQ, he toured Europe’s top concert halls as part of the ECHO Rising Stars 2014/15 program. His students have received prizes at competitions including Prémio Jovens Músicos, Concurso Vasco Barbosa, Concurso Capela, and the International Competition “Cidade do Fundão.”
Vítor studied with Alberto Gaio Lima, Aníbal Lima, and Gerardo Ribeiro (later his assistant at Northwestern University). He also worked with Alexei Mikhline, Sergey Kravchenko, Eduard Wulfson, and Mauricio Fuks. He specialized in string quartet with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet) and worked with members of the Alban Berg, Lasalle, Melos, Emerson, and Vermeer quartets. He was a Gulbenkian Foundation scholar.
Winner of the Prémio Jovens Músicos in both intermediate and advanced levels, he also received first prizes at the Samuel Thaviu Strings Competition and the NU Concerto Competition. As a soloist, he has performed with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orquestra Nacional do Porto, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, and Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa in venues such as Gulbenkian Foundation, CCB, Culturgest, and Casa da Música.
An advocate for contemporary music, he has worked with composers including John Adams and Karin Renquist, and premiered numerous works by Portuguese composers. He is also a permanent member of the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble.
